Tokyo on foot - Inspiring memoir by an urban sketcher

"Tokyo on foot" is a beautiful self-made graphic documentary of Tokyo metropolitan by a guy named Florent Chavouet (french name). Florent's girlfriend got a 6-month internship in a Japanese company, located in Tokyo. Both of them went and while She went to intern, Florent explored the smallest corners of Tokyo. Carrying a sketchpad and colored pencils. drawing portraits, buildings and scribbling about many issues he found somewhat amusing.

The book is full of urban sketches like buildings, inaccurate maps and descriptions of day to day Japanese life. Sharing with us his thoughts on shopping unidentified drinks, unfamiliar jobs and simple acts that becomes complex for the newbie western in Japan.

I got familiar with the book by a mistake when a friend took a photo of a some discounted books in a Japanese bookstore. I zoomed-in and went over the titles. tokyo on foot caught my eyes and got me curious just by its cover. showing straight away the urban sketching style which I really like.

Tokyo on foot is a cute and very visually memoir that will surely inspire you to plan a trip to Japan and explore foreign territories. Florent with his unique way teaches us how to observe the unfamiliar and reach out.
